[Back][Next]

22 NOVEMBER 1944
First Lieutenant Larry E. Bormann, pilot of "Playmate Two Two", departed Morotai at 0450 on a special mission to pick up a survivor reported down on the Eastern shore of Borneo at 02°33'N, 118°52'E. Lieutenant Bormann, with adequate cover, arrived at the designated point at 1045, landed and waited for the survivor to be brought out to the ship by friendly natives. The survivor, First Lieutenant Joe K. Owens was a member of the 68th Fighter Squadron. He was in good shape and reported that the natives treated him with great kindness and consideration. At 1100, Lieutenant Bormann left his point of rescue and dismissed his fighter escort. At 1545, he received a call from a B-24 that five men were bailing out of another B-24 on a bearing of 310° 60' from Race Island. The B-24 remained with the survivors, circling them and keeping its IFF on. The rescue plane picked up the B-24 on its radar and proceeded to the area, arriving at 1600. They sighted two empty life rafts and one with a survivor aboard. They landed, picked him up and took-off but immediately sighted two more survivors on a raft, landed and effected their rescue. They then sighted another raft containing another survivor. They taxied to him and took him aboard, finally taking off for home base at 1725 with only 200 gallons of gas left. The rescue was effected at approximately 03°09'N, 127°21'W. The survivors had bailed out of their ship at 1530 after it sustained severe damage from enemy anti-aircraft fire while on a bombing mission over the Celebes. The survivors, members of the 394th Bomb Squadron, had been in the water for less than an hour and all were in good shape.
