MISSION REPORT - RESCUES - 01

16 DECEMBER 1944
Captain Gerard F. Wientjes, pilot of "Playmate Four One", departed Morotai at 0350 for Sonoton Point, to cover strikes on Panay. Contacted fighters at 0845 off Negros and proceeded on to orbit point, arriving at 0940. At 1025, sighted at P-47 on fire circling over Panay Gulf, close to the rescue ship. Captain Wientjes landed five minutes after the survivor, First Lieutenant Howard C. Neumann, 39th Fighter Squadron, had ditched his ship, and took him aboard. The survivor was slightly injured and was made comfortable by the Surgical Technician. They took off at 1030 and landed at Dipolog and refueled a P-47 which landed there on 14 December because of fuel shortage. While there, two more P-47's landed because of fuel shortage. Captain Wientjes picked up Paul R. Mchom at Dipolog, member of Philippine Garrison, and brought him to Morotai, landing at 1740.

Finally contacted Devil 1 on South coast of Negros, halfway to orbit point

Devil 2 relieved Devil 1

1025:

Noticed P-47 circling in Panay Gulf and saw large puff of smoke. Investigated and found P-47 pilot down

1030:

Landed. Rescued P-47 1st Lieutenant Howard G. Neuman. 0814738, 39th Fighter Squadron. Lt Neuman had been down approximately five minutes. He suffered slight cuts on the mouth and several loose teeth. Received message: "Upon completion of rz proceeded to North Islet. Orbit until 1230. Acknowledge."

1035:

Took off

1040:

Acknowledged message: "Have rescued injured P-47 pilot. Will proceed to North Islet if possible. Investigated possible mirror flashes on Guimaras Island. Found nothing

1050:

Started back to Diplog to drop off supplies

1140:

Called Devil 2 and told them we would be okay and it would be okay to leave us. Sent message to base: "Landing at Dipolog at 1215."

1230:

Landed at Dipolog. P-47 pilot 1st Lt Smith had landed two days before because of fuel shortage. We gave him 100 gallons. Devil 2 also landed because they could not get through weather and were running low on gas. We told them we would bring gas for all 4 ships tomorrow morning.

Investigated A-120 & A-115. Results nil

1510:

Investigated A-085. Results nil

1530:

Sent message to base as follows: "Have personnel from 39th and 40th Fighter Sqs meet us. ETA: 1845."

1750:

B-24 passed over us and asked us to follow him as he was very low on gas. Followed B-24 all the way in. He made it okay. Couldn't land when we arrived because of crash landings on strip
