Sergeant Robert F. Butler (Supply NCO) poses with a shark
that he shot with a carbine on Middleburg Island.
Exerpt from Hugh Pennington's diary Saturday, 16 December 1944 -
"No mission for today so I lay around all the
morning doing nothing! A plane came down from Morotai but didn't bring any
mail as they were enroute to Biak and Woende Lagoon.
Captain Goldberg, Sergeant
Butler and myself went fishing. They were biting good and we caught 8 of
them - had them on a string trailing in the water behind the life raft and a
sand shark followed us in. Sergeant Butler went after a carbine while I
tantalized the shark with the fish - finally shot him and drug him in. He
weight about 100 pounds. Cut him up and had shark steak."
