Captain
Louie Goldberg, (1911-1975), was born in Des Moines, Iowa on February 9, 1911.
After graduating from East High School in Des Moines, he attended the University of Iowa
for both his Undergraduate (Pre-Med) degree and his Medical degree, (M.D.) graduating in
1936. He worked in private practice with his partner, Dr. E.J. Kelly, until he joined the
service in February 1942. He was first sent to Palm Springs, California (rough duty!) to
service between 100 - 150 men. Since there was not much to do, he also served the actors
in the local area. A couple of his friends were Bob Hope and William Powell. Since Dr.
Goldberg would not let anyone pay him for his services, Bob Hope asked Louie what he could
do for him. Being the generous person that he was, Louie told him that he needed nothing,
but his men sure could use a swimming pool to cool off from the hot days. Bob Hope had one
built for them!
