Captains
Louie Goldberg, (Flight
Surgeon) and Gerard F. Wientjes (pilot)
pose for the 13th Air Force cameras as they stand
in front of a Squadron OA-10A. (Note the rafts painted on the port side indicating the running
total of rescues the ship had been credited with. A white star around some of the rafts
indicated that the ship effected the rescue while under hostile fire. The others
meant that the ship effected the rescue while taking no hostile fire. Most rescues were
effected quickly, leaving no time for the enemy to arrive on the scene.)
Both were part of a harrowing mission on
11 March 1945 that almost claimed their lives.
