Captain
Charles Franklin Tully Jr., (1916-2002)
was born on the 30 May 1916 in Grand Island, Nebraska to Charles Franklin
and Marion (Cochrane) Tully. He graduated from Grand Island High School in May 1933 and began his college studies at the
University of Wisconsin at Madison in the fall of 1933. Chuck graduated in
1937 with a Bachelor's degree in Commerce.
Chuck enlisted in
the Army Air Corps on the 30 March 1942 in Chicago, Illinios. After Basic
Training he would be attending the seven (7) month long Aviation Cadet
Program. Preflight was at Santa Ana, California - Primary at King City,
California - Basic at Chino, California - Advanced at Stockton Field,
California - PBY transition training at Pensacola, Florida - and
Navigation at Selma, Louisiana. He earned both the Army Air Corps wings and
Naval Aviator's wings, graduating from class 43-C on the 10 March 1943.
Other graduates from this class that were members of the 2nd ERS were
Jarvis T. Yagla and George A.
Barnes. In July 1944, Chuck flew as a co-pilot on OA-10A,
44-33883 [Orders] from Sacramento,
California over the Golden Gate Bridge all the way to Hawaii, then continued
to
Townsville,
Australia. The rest of his crew consisted of: (Pilot) 1st Lieutenant
Lloyd R. Humphreys, (Navigator) 1st Lieutenant
Frank W. Abele, (Engineer) Tech Sergeant Travis O. Brimer, (Radio Opr.) Sgt
John W. Goldenbaum, and (Radar Opr.) Sergeant William A. Allman. While with
the 2nd Emergency, Chuck flew Eighty-six (86) combat missions and more than
600 flight hours. His awards and decorations include the Air Medal (3/OLC),
The Asicatic - Pacific Campaign Medal,
Chuck married Clarajean nee Deveraux on the
10 March 1943 and they had 2 children; Nan Tully Willett (b.
1944) and Alice Tully Atikins (b. 1947).
Chuck's entire professional career was with International Harvester Company
(later known as Navistar International) beginning in 1937 (hiatus from 1942
to 1945). Following his war service he returned to International Harvester,
retiring in 1976 as director of of Corporate Pricing. In the early 1950's
Chuck went back to school, earning his Master of Business Administration
(MBA) from the University of Chicago in Finance.
Nan had a
distinguished career as an occupational therapist. Alice was an
international banker, an executive with the Chicago and American Bar
Associations, and a career counselor.
Chuck passed away on the 27 April 2002 at the
Lutheran Home in Arlington Heights, Illinios just one month shy of his 86th
birthday.
