Flight
Officer John Francis "Jack" Leonard (1923-1945) was born on the 26 October
1923 to George and Halfrieda Leonard. He was one of five (5) boys; George
(Bud), Bill, Paul, Larry and one sister Mary Louise (Ouise). He grew up in
Hackensack, New Jersey and attended St. Francis Xavier Military High School
in New York City. During his senior year in high school, he drove to
Atlantic City, New Jersey and enlisted in the USAAF. Two of his brothers
(Bud and Paul) also served in Word War II. His younger brother, Larry,
served in the Navy during the Korean War.
Jack ws a co-pilot, having
flown in over forty-two (42) combat missions in the Second Emergency. He was
promoted posthumously to Second Lieutenant after he was killed during a
rescue mission on the 7 October 1945 along with
Frank P. "Bud" Hayes.
He was awarded the Purple Heart, Air Medal (2 OLC) and the Distinguished
Flying Cross
