Nicholas Edward Bailey (1912-1996) came to Loomis on January 1st, 1955 with his family to make their
home. Nicholas was born in a sod house in Arnold, Nebraska, 10 miles from a
town. His father, James Henry Bailey, had a 200 acre farm and his mother
Wilda had been a teacher at a local one-room schoolhouse. James Bailey
became the rural mail carrier making the rounds three times a week with
horse and buggy. Young Nicholas went to the Arnold, Nebraska school for a
time, then to Broken Bow School. He graduated from Broken Bow High School in
1930. He came to California and attended
junior college at Long Beach. Then he enlisted as a medical corpsman at
Letterman Hospital in San Francisco. Here he worked in the psychopathic ward
at night and went to the University of California in the day time. he
received his degree in 1937. Nicholas went back to Nebraska to the
University of Nebraska Medical College at Omaha where he received his M.D.
in 1941.
He was serving his internship at
Orange County Hospital in Santa Ana at the time of Pearl Harbor. On June
15, 1942 he went on active duty with the Army Air Corps as a First
Lieutenant. In a short time he went to the school of Aviation Medicine at
Randolph Field in Texas. After a year's work with the aviation groups he was
qualified as a full flight surgeon. He was ordered overseas to the 13th Air
Force stationed in the South Pacific, being assigned to the Second Emergency
Rescue Squadron. In 21 months he accumulated 500 hours of combat flying time
for which he received the Silver Star.

Nicholas came back to
California to Camp Stoneman at Pittsburg in November 1945. Back in Nebraska,
he married Sara "Sallie" Robberson on 18 December 1945. Sally was from
Broken Bow and was a registered nurse. Sally's father, Grover Robberson was
a Methodist minister. She practiced her profession when needed at Dr.
Bailey's office, which is located on Horseshoe Bar Road near the freeway.
The young couple lived in Ainsworth, Nebraska where he practiced for two
years then they moved to Lincoln, California.
The Bailey's have a fine family of seven children: Nicholas, James, Frank,
Douglas, Diana, Penny, and Barbara. His son Nicholas has completed his law
studies and will open a law office here in Loomis this month. Dr. Bailey's
oldest daughter, Diana, has entered medical school at the University of
Southern California and plans to enter family practice when she graduates.
His son Douglas also is planning to enter medical school to follow his
father's profession.
