Flight
Officer Earl Granville Fugett Jr.,
(1925-2013), was born in Pinebluff, Arkansas on May 31, 1925 to Earl G. and Italene
Walden Fugett. Upon graduation from San Jacino High School in Houston, (1942), Lieutenant
Fugett attended one year of college at Rice University before entering the service in July
1943. He went to basic training at Sheppard Field and then to the College Training
Detachment at the Oklahoma Baptist University. (2-3 mo.)
Lieutenant Fugett then attended pre-flight training at Ellington
Field, Texas followed by advanced navigation training. Upon graduation he was shipped to
Keesler Field, Mississippi where he performed searches, patrolls and training. He remained
there until January 1945 when he was sent to the South Pacific to join the Second
Emergency Rescue Squadron. Lieutenant Fugett stayed with the Second until after the war,
heading stateside in January 1946. He was separated from active service, but remained in
the Reserve until the Korean conflict started.
Mr. Fugett now took a job with the Dow
Chemical Company and travelled the Eastern seaboard to such places as Philadelphia, New
York, and Virginia. He stayed with Dow for five years, then worked for the American
Machine & Foundry. (A.M.F.) He worked for AMF for 12 years then took a job with a
Swiss group running their U.S. Industrial Division. He retired in 1990 and currently
resides in Houston, Texas with his wife Madeline. Earl Fugett has two daughters from a
previous marraige.
Earl passed away January 15th 2013 at the age of
87.
