The headstone for Lieutenant William E. "Billy"
Thornton who was a 2nd ERS Navigator and was killed in the crash of a
Squadron Catalina on 22 June 1945.
The crew had just rescued men from a downed B-24 Liberator and were
attempting to take-off when they crashed head on into a wave. Two members of
the Liberator crew were also lost. He is buried in Grove Hill Memorial Park
in Dallas, Texas and was just 19 when he was killed. |
